Prioritize Human Over Notifications Every Time

Written by Erik Windrow

Look around the next time you're out in public.

At restaurants, families gather around the same table while everyone scrolls through a different world.

At youth sporting events, parents watch the game through a phone screen instead of their own eyes.

At airports, parks, beaches, concerts, and neighborhood sidewalks, we're physically present—but often mentally somewhere else.

Technology has given us incredible ways to stay connected. Yet, in many ways, it's also made it easier to disconnect from the people and moments right in front of us.

After more than 25 years in real estate, I've had the privilege of witnessing some of life's biggest milestones.

I've watched first-time buyers receive the keys to their very first home.

Families find the beach house they've dreamed about for years.

Retirees begin an exciting new chapter.

Grandparents picture future holidays, birthdays, and summers filled with laughter.

These aren't simply real estate transactions.

Their life stories unfolding.

And yet, even during these unforgettable moments, there's often one familiar interruption.

A buzz.

A notification.

A text that feels urgent.

A social media update that can surely wait.

Without realizing it, we allow small distractions to steal pieces of moments we'll never get back.

The phone isn't the problem.

Our priorities sometimes are.

Technology is one of the greatest tools we've ever created. It helps us work, learn, communicate, and navigate everyday life.

But somewhere along the way, many of us stopped using technology as a tool—and started allowing it to dictate our attention.

That's why I like to give the word P.H.O.N.E. a different meaning:

Prioritize
Human
Over
Notifications
Every Time

Imagine what life might look like if we lived by those five words.

Family dinners with real conversations.

Watching your child's game without checking emails between innings.

Walking the beach while listening to the waves instead of another notification.

Sitting on the porch of your dream home, fully present, realizing there's nowhere else you'd rather be.

The homes we remember most aren't defined by square footage or finishes.

They're defined by the memories created inside them.

Life isn't measured by how quickly we answer notifications.

It's measured by the moments that stay with us long after the screen goes dark.

The next time your phone buzzes, pause for just a moment and ask yourself:

"Is this notification more important than the person or experience in front of me?"

Most of the time, the answer is no.

The message can wait.

The email can wait.

The social media update can wait.

Life can't.

So perhaps it's time we redefine one of the most common words in our daily lives.

P.H.O.N.E.

Prioritize Human Over Notifications Every Time.

Because the greatest investment you'll ever make isn't just in a home.

It's in the moments, relationships, and memories that make that house feel like one.
